Welcome back to my blog! If you are searching for the absolute funniest book to add to your 4th-grade summer reading list, you have to check out J vs. K. Honestly, since I am in 5th grade now, I can tell you this is easily one of the coolest books I have ever picked up.
The Ultimate Author Showdown
First of all, this awesome novel was created by two legendary, real-life Newbery Medal winners: Kwame Alexander and Jerry Craft. Because they are both massive bestsellers, they decided to team up and write a story about an epic rivalry. In fact, the book is written as a journal with hilarious black-and-white cartoons mixed right into the pages.
What is “J vs. K” About?
Basically, the story is about two super-creative fifth graders at Dean Ashley Public School.
- J: He is a total j-enius at drawing cartoon pictures, but he absolutely hates reading text.
- K: He is a masterful poet who is incredible with words but cannot draw at all.
Suddenly, both boys enter the big school storytelling competition to see who is the best. Therefore, a wild battle begins between the artist and the writer, filled with funny double-crosses and pranks. However, as the contest heats up, they realize that working together might be better than fighting.
Why It Belongs on Your Reading List
Ultimately, this book is perfect for summer because it is super fast to read and packed with dad jokes. In addition, the authors constantly interrupt the story to leave funny notes to each other, which makes you feel like you are in on a secret joke.
